Asia–Europe Routes Lead the June Rankings

Ningbo → Valencia was the most tracked route in June, accounting for 0.8% of the tracked routes.

Two other Asia–Europe connections also appeared in the top 10: Shekou → Valencia and Ningbo → Istanbul (Ambarli).

The presence of several Chinese ports in the rankings reflects the continued importance of Asia–Europe trade lanes in global container shipping. However, transit times on these routes remain relatively long, ranging from 33 to 45 days in the June dataset.

India–US Services Show Strong Direct Connectivity

The June data also highlights strong direct connectivity between India and the United States.

Both Mundra → New York and Nhava Sheva → New York were almost entirely or completely direct:

  • Mundra → New York: 99.7% direct
  • Nhava Sheva → New York: 100% direct

Despite this strong direct connectivity, average transit times were 36 and 38 days, respectively.

This is a good example of why direct service does not always mean short transit time. Geographic distance, sailing schedules, and network design continue to play a major role in overall transit time.

Transshipment Remains Critical on Selected Routes

Some routes in the June dataset relied heavily on transshipment.

The clearest example was Valparaiso → Philadelphia, where 100% of tracked services involved transshipment.

Similarly:

  • Shanghai → Istanbul: 49.2% transshipment
  • Ningbo → Lazaro Cardenas: 44.3% transshipment
  • Port Elizabeth → Rotterdam: 41.6% transshipment

These figures demonstrate how carrier networks use major hub ports to connect trade lanes where direct services are less available.

MSC ranked first in June with a 21.2% share, followed by Maersk Line at 16.2% and CMA CGM at 14.7%.

The top three carriers together represented more than 50% of the carrier share in the June dataset, showing the continued concentration of container shipping activity among the industry's largest carriers.

Interestingly, MSC and Maersk had relatively high transshipment ratios:

  • MSC: 55.8%
  • Maersk Line: 65.6%

What Does June's Data Tell Us?

Three trends stand out from the June ShipsGo data:

1. Asia–Europe trade lanes remain prominent.
Ningbo, Shekou and Shanghai all appeared among the top 10 routes, highlighting the importance of Chinese ports in global container flows.

2. Direct service does not always mean faster transit.
Mundra → New York and Nhava Sheva → New York were almost entirely direct, yet both had transit times of more than 36 days.

3. Transshipment remains a key part of global carrier networks.
Several major carriers and trade lanes relied heavily on transshipment, demonstrating the importance of hub ports in connecting global markets.
