In this article, we looked at world trade and specifically container shipping in European ports. Based on the latest throughput data and strategic relevance, here are the top five busiest ports in Europe by container activity and operational impact. You can also find the historical 2022 information in this post. Let’s start with the updated list of 2025’s top five ports based in Europe.

1

Port of Antwerp-Bruges

Belgium

3.4 million TEUs

2

Port of Rotterdam

Netherlands

3.36 million TEUs

3

Port of Hamburg

Germany

2.0 million TEUs

4

Port of Valencia

Spain

~5.0 million TEUs

5

Port of Algeciras

Spain

~4.8 million TEUs

1. Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium

Q1 2025 Throughput: 3.4 million TEUs
2024 Total (Est.): 13.5 million TEUs

The 2022 merger between Antwerp and Zeebrugge has matured into Europe’s most dynamic port entity. In Q1 2025, it surpassed Rotterdam in container traffic, claiming the top spot. Its strategic location offers seamless access to both North Sea trade routes and inland waterways. Antwerp-Bruges specializes in high-value cargo such as chemicals, perishables, and diamonds. The port is also investing heavily in green logistics and hydrogen infrastructure.

2. Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands

Q1 2025 Throughput: 3.36 million TEUs
2024 Total: 13.8 million TEUs

Rotterdam remains Europe’s largest port by overall tonnage, despite a 4.1% decline in total cargo volume in H1 2025. Container throughput, however, grew by 2.7%. As a deep-sea hub and critical node for European hinterland logistics, Rotterdam continues to invest in automation, AI-driven planning, and dual-use infrastructure that blends commercial and defense needs.

3. Port of Hamburg, Germany

Q1 2025 Throughput: 2.0 million TEUs
2024 Total: 7.8 million TEUs

Hamburg balances historical legacy with cutting-edge logistics. Located on the Elbe River, it is a key gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. The port’s recent digital upgrades include autonomous guided vehicles and real-time cargo platforms. With a year-on-year growth of over 6% in Q1 2025, Hamburg is reinforcing its role as Germany’s most innovative maritime hub.

4. Port of Valencia, Spain

2024 Total: ~5.0 million TEUs

Valencia is Southern Europe’s most important container port. Its terminals support diverse cargo types — including refrigerated goods, vehicles, and cruise traffic. The Valenciaport Innovation Hub is accelerating green logistics, port digitization, and multimodal connectivity. Thanks to strong links to Asia and North Africa, Valencia continues to gain relevance in Mediterranean trade corridors.

5. Port of Algeciras, Spain

2024 Total: ~4.8 million TEUs

Positioned at the Strait of Gibraltar, Algeciras is a vital transshipment and passenger gateway connecting Europe and Africa. While it saw some cargo decline in early 2025, it remains a top-5 player. The port has implemented significant sustainability measures, including renewable energy systems and emissions reduction programs, securing its place as a green leader in the Mediterranean.

Top 5 European Ports by Size and Activity in 2025 are:

Port of Antwerp-Bruges

Port of Rotterdam

Port of Hamburg

Port of Valencia

Port of Algeciras
