CO₂ emission in shipping

We should know that with the increase in maritime trade, the effect of CO₂ emissions has also started to be of great importance. In the last few months, we have all very much perceived the importance of the shipping industry to the global economy, with commercial ships transporting 90% of global trade.

The changing world and the impact of CO₂ emissions

We can say that the shipping industry has become the main vein of world trade with the rise of the Covid-19 pandemic; with the onset of the pandemic, humanity started a new era of online shopping. While imports and exports inevitably expanded around the globe, we have witnessed many crises like insufficient space, traffic in the ports, and scarcity of resources.

Well, while world commerce has increased so vastly and shipping companies are producing more and more vessels every day and releasing them into the water, have you thought about the impact of this situation on the world? This article will underline the sustainability in the shipping industry and ShipsGo‘s attitude on the matter.

Transport and logistics emit 3.5 billion tonnes of CO₂ every year. Transitioning to a net-zero economy by eliminating emissions in the sector has become the priority of the world shipping giants trying to reach the 7th and 13th goals of the United Nations “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDG’s).

ShipsGo will indicate CO₂ emissions

ShipsGo has stepped into a new study to raise awareness of all our users on the sustainable shipping industry. In the ShipsGo Academy’s “Environmental Sensitivity For Container Transportation” study, we examined the importance of being environmentally sensitive in carrier company selection. We concluded that for most BCOs and Forwarders, this criterion is of great importance. In other words, we observed that the people related to the industry attach importance to sustainability and the environment, so we worked for a development where they can see the environmental impact of the voyage they are tracking. All of our users will be able to monitor how much carbon is released during the container’s voyage they tracked. We have updated the beneficial notification emails they always receive and included the carbon emission during transportation.

Suez Canal Accident

In the previous days, an accident that could seriously damage the world economy occurred in the Suez Canal, one of the busiest points of the world’s maritime traffic. As known about the Ever Given vessel, it has a container carrying capacity of 20 thousand tons and a self-weight of 220 tons. It ran aground due to the sandstorm and prevented all vessel crossings, panicking the whole world trade. An average of 70 vessels have been provided passage per day. In comparison, approximately 12 percent (about 19 thousand vessels per year) of the world trade passes here on the Suez Canal, which acts as a bridge and connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea.

What will this accident cost the world?

It is known that the accident that occurred in the Suez Canal, which carries such importance to world trade, has prevented the passage of over 300 ships, 30 of which are petroleum tankers. These disruptions in the petroleum trade caused partial increases in petroleum prices worldwide. Reputed maritime magazine Lloyd’s List published that the goods worth $ 9 billion were spoiled due to the Suez Canal accident. According to some reports, it is stated that world trade suffers approximately 10 billion dollars in losses each day.

What is the approach of ShipsGo to the Suez Canal accident?

As a result of this unfortunate accident, ShipsGo has been diligently investigating and gathering information about the accident from the very first minutes. In addition to closely monitoring the event by all teams in ShipsGo, our operations team, with more than 20 members, aimed to check and inform our customers about the vessels and containers affected in the accident. The operations team has checked the container and vessel status many times manually and robot technology developed by the ShipsGo IT team.

As a result of the operations and IT teams’ scans: ShipsGo users’ loadings were being transported in the 115 vessels among over 300 vessels as 5410 containers awaiting the opening of the Suez Canal. According to the data collected, there are 2595 shipments and approximately 8000 TEUs remaining in the Suez Canal.

163 ShipsGo users were reached and informed about the status of the total 5410 containers. They have been sent a list of their containers that remain in the vessels waiting in the Suez Canal. In this way, they were able to provide their customers with the necessary information at the right time.

Even the smallest disruptions occurring in such important key points can deeply affect the world economy. Business functions may be interrupted not only on a company basis but also on an individual basis. For the companies and individuals in the import and export sector, the transparency and accessibility of the goods during the vessel voyage mean everything, especially in such a game-changing case. So, it carries prime importance for us that ShipsGo users know every current situation about the accident. To ensure this, all of our teams are closely monitoring the situation since day one.

Customer Reaction

Reaching 163 customers at the right time allowed us to receive good feedback from them. Our teams’ detailed status emails in such a sensitive situation paved the way for our customers to develop correct business moves and create fast solutions for their operations.
