Container Shipping Visibility

Beneficial Cargo Owners (BCO) demand more information on container transport visibility if you compared it a decade ago. In the era of the just-in-time delivery industry; information and real-time tracking data are critical. Demand from the cargo owners forces the freight forwarders to give that service at a high-quality level. Informing the customers in terms of ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival), delays, and BL (Bill of Lading) split in transhipment ports are critical.

As the number of transshipments increases, container visibility complexity increases, too. Transshipment can create risks, and those risks bring those questions into mind;

· Are all containers in my shipment (master Bill of Lading) discharged at the transshipment port?

· Are all shipping containers/container loaded on the right connecting ship on time?

· Are my containers injured/lost/damaged during the transshipment process?

Container visibility needs information on each stage; Port of loading(POL), sailing, transshipment port, the port of discharge(POD). Every unexpected change must be informed to all related parties interested in the cargo (container). According to the ShipsGo tracking database, 35 % of the total shipments are transit shipments. Those shipments need more attention and special care when compared to direct shipments.

Port of Beirut Explosion

Port of Beirut is among the top 10 container seaports in the Mediterranean Sea and is considered the gateway to the Middle East. Many top container shipping companies have been using it as a transhipment port. According to the ShipsGo tracking database, eight shipping companies including MSC, Maersk, Arkas, APL, Hamburg Sud, Hapag Lloyd, Sealand are using the port of Beirut.

This port faced an immense explosion tragedy on August 4, 2020. This unfortunate incident has left 204 dead, thousands injured, and 300,000 homeless. In addition to that, US$ 15 billion in property damage.

The cruise ship berthed nearby suffered extensive damage and capsized overnight. Two large livestock carriers were heavily damaged. Hapag-Lloyd’s offices in Beirut were destroyed. CMA CGM’s offices, located a few hundred meters away from the explosion site, were severely damaged.

ShipsGo’s Reaction

ShipsGo tracking service operation team having 20 operation support experts perform the double-checking of the container’s movements, especially in the transhipment ports manually in addition to the robot technology developed by the ShipsGo IT team. On the other hand, this team scans incidents related to container transportation.

“When our team scanned the explosion at Beirut Port, they started to determine how many containers were waiting at the Beirut Port during the explosion. After a quick scanning of the ShipsGo tracking database, 80 containers were identified belonging to eleven companies. Ten of them were freight forwarders; one of them was BCO (Beneficial Cargo Owner). We started to write e-mails to all customers having containers at the Beirut Port. We have informed them by using container no, Bill of Lading(BL) no, and shipment Ref. We have also urged to contact the carrier and local agent immediately”. says Halil Türe, ShipsGo Operations Team Leader.

Customer Reaction

As already mentioned, eleven related customers of ShipsGo were notified immediately after the explosion. Many of them did not know their cargoes were at the Port of Beirut during the outbreak. They contacted the related parties (carriers, local agents, insurance companies) to sort their container situations.

SASA at a glance

SASA is a leading producer in the world for polyester staple fibers, filament yarns, polyester-based and speciality polymers and intermediates (DMT). Combining and blending a leadership responsibility in the industry with a robust technical inheritance and a high production capacity, SASA successfully manages the whole process from design to production and distribution.

SASA began its activities in the polyester sector in 1966. Since its establishment, the company has been one of the pioneer corporations in its field, demonstrating rapid growth thanks to incessant investments.

As of 30th April 2015, Erdemoğlu Holding became the principal shareholder of SASA with 51% shares by acquiring all SASA shares of Sabancı Holding A.Ş. and 49% of stocks are offered to the public. Following the mandatory share purchase process completed in 2015 August, Erdemoğlu Holding A.Ş.’s share ratio reached 84,80% in SASA Polyester Sanayi A.Ş.

Having Dynamit Nobel, ICI, and Dupont technologies in its know-how database, SASA has a robust technical infrastructure thanks to its leading production plants with high capacities, its qualified employees of over 1500 people and its Research and Development Center established in 2002.

SASA’s central production facility is located in Adana and established on a field of 1.250.000 m². Its raw material storage facility is located in İskenderun.

Among Turkey’s most exporting companies in 2017, SASA ranked 76th in Turkey

Approach: ShipsGo BCO Package with ERP Integration

SASA uses ShipsGo services both in inbound (import) and outbound (export) logistics activities. The company employs 11 different container shipping lines in its shipments. After the integration of ShipsGo with SASA’s SAP-ERP system, the company can collect information from ShipsGo system concerning the location of containers and ETA about the related POL/POD port. By using this information, they can follow all of their containers through the live map. This map is also shown on TV Screens located in the production site as a sign of how global company SASA is.

In addition to the standard reports and alerts of ShipsGo, SASA IT Team developed customized reports and alerts concerning the expectations of logistics/transport departments by the help of the data supported by the ShipsGo. For example, SASA’s sales department, at the beginning of each week gets the information of all containers to arrive and starts to communicate buyers to accelerate the payment process. “This customized report eased the payment collection of our company,” says IT Manager Ali Dilbas. He also adds “we are planning to develop customized reports very soon.”

SASA also allows his customers to follow their containers by live map. The customers can reach the position and the other details of the container merely by entering the container number. Customer phone traffic has decreased by 40 % after this service according to the Sales department. “We also observed cost reduction depending on the “release alert” notifications in terms of demurrage costs,” says IT Manager Ali Dilbas.

With the other service provided by ShipsGo, when our customers enter the container information on our company’s website, they can reach the information about where the container is coming and the estimated time to arrive at the port on the world map. Customers’ phone traffic has decreased by 40% in the sales department.

Outcomes: Measurable and Solid Outcomes

• API integration process with SAP-ERP system with ShipsGo.

• Increased customer satisfaction due to the visibility of the containers.

• Customers’ phone traffic has decreased by 40% in the sales department.

ShipsGo container transportation visibility service preferred by DHL

DHL LLP selects global container shipping platform ShipsGo as the container tracking/visibility partner. DHL, giving services as the Global Lead Logistics Partner (LLP) starts to use ShipsGo tracking service for its global customers. ShipsGo tracking service includes tracking all movements from the port-to-port supply chain. ShipsGo also gives “release” and “gate out” alerts within all container ports and shipping lines for its partner DHL LLP. ShipsGo users get a message if their container is not released from the port within the “free time” period. In addition to that, they receive “Gate Out” dates of their discharged containers. By this service, our users avoid unnecessary and unexpected costs such as detention and demurrage fee arising from a lack of information about their container positions.

“We have developed our tracking service quality thanks to our unique algorithm. This algorithm allows using of automation at the maximum level in the tracking/visibility process. We are pleased; DHL as a giant global company is, preferring our tracking service quality, says Merdan Erdogan, CEO and the Co-Founder of ShipsGo.

The integration of the ShipsGo platform and DHL IT system took six months. DHL LLP and ShipsGo systems communicate the tracking data of a container by using Application Programming Interfaces (API) technology.
