The container shipping industry is going through significant changes, with an emphasis on meeting the needs of global trade. Innovations and trends, like the incorporation of artificial intelligence and blockchain solutions, as well as sustainability practices, have profoundly impacted container transportation. These developments are expected to improve the industry’s efficiency, sustainability, and global supply chains.

Additionally, the container shipping industry has some issues. Although some processes that started with the onset of the pandemic have been largely overcome, some continue. The disruption of the supply chain and the effect of the Russia-Ukraine war also had some impact on the market.

What expect us in Container Shipping Trends in 2023?

We wanted to talk about what awaits the container shipping industry. And we started a new project: ShipsGo Talks.

About our ShipsGo Talks content, we periodically receive guests from the industry, academia, and our company, and we chat about the industry. Our live broadcasts are on Youtube, Linkedin, and Twitter simultaneously. ShipsGo Co-Founder Okan Tuna moderates the live-streams. Our first episode took place about Container Transportation Trends in 2023.

The maritime operations in the United States have evolved significantly since we first wrote our first blog of this series, which was for 2022 ‘s Top 5 U.S. Ports, driven by e-commerce acceleration, infrastructure investment, and global trade changes. This updated 2025 guide highlights the most active and largest U.S. ports based on cargo volume, TEUs handled, and operational relevance, helping logistics professionals, shippers, and supply chain strategists understand where the activity is happening now. You can also find the historical 2022 information in this post. Let’s start with the updated list of 2025’s top five ports based in the USA.

1. Port of Los Angeles (California)

Trend: Maintains status as the busiest U.S. port. Moderate recovery from 2022 dip; leading again with strong Asia-Pacific trade.

Despite facing supply chain bottlenecks in 2021–2022, the Port of Los Angeles has reclaimed its spot as the busiest port in the United States, and protect it’s place since 2022. With strategic digitalization initiatives, faster customs processing, and added berth capacity, the port handled the most TEUs in 2025.

What is the meaning of the cost of goods in transit?

The cost of goods in transit refers to merchandise and other inventory items that have been shipped by the seller but have not yet been received by the buyer. Let’s take the shipping journey from Guanta to Los Angeles. It takes approximately 30 days. To calculate the costs of in-transit inventory, logisticians should know the annual inventory costs of their companies. It changes approximately 20-25 % of the inventory at hand. In this case, let’s take it at 25 %. Also, also let’s take the value of cargo in a 20’ container as of $50,000.

Do the math;

average shipment value of $50,000 x annual inventory carrying cost of 25% = $12,500 per year/365 = $34.24 per day).

From Guanto to Los Angeles, it takes approximately 30 days.

So the cost of goods in transit is equal to $1,027 per container.

If you have 50 containers shipment per month; your monthly cost of goods of transit is equal to $1,027 x 50 = $51,350

As a logistician tour task is to reduce the transit time and, needless to say, decrease the in-transit inventory costs. ShipsGo service finder can offer to assist and offer you Long Beach (6 km away from Los Angeles) instead of Los Angeles as POD (Port of Discharge) for the sake of reducing transit times for 4-5 days.

Classification of inventory carrying cost

Inventory carrying costs of a company can be classified as follows;

This should be based on the company’s cost of capital (mainly libor based (https://www.global-rates.com/interest-rates/libor/libor.aspx) using the following formula; Cost of Capital x Average Net Value of Inventory

Storage and Handling Costs: Costs related with the physical environment and inventory handling.

Shrinkage: The costs associated with breakage, pilferage, and deterioration of inventories. Usually pertains to the loss of material through handling damage, theft, or neglect.

Insurance and Taxes: The cost of insuring inventories and taxes associated with the holding of inventory.

Total Obsolescence for Raw Material, WIP (Work in Progress), and Finished Goods Inventory: Inventory reserves have taken due to obsolescence and scrap and include products exceeding the shelf life, i.e., spoils and is no good for use in its original purpose.

ShipsGo – Digital Container Tracking Platform

ShipsGo’s vision is to make people happy with the information. Since the beginning of our journey in the container transportation business, we have been trying to organize the shipping industry’s information and make it accessible universally. We have developed our well-known two products in the digital container transportation market; digital container tracking platform and route finder. We have reached 5,000 daily searches on our website from 70+ countries and plan to reach 30,000 daily searches worldwide.

11 March 2019 – This week, ShipsGo is celebrating its third anniversary following three years of rapid technology development for digital container transportation. The company now gives its services to more than 160 countries, with ambitions to make shipping better for BCOs, carriers, freight forwarders.

Launched on 11 March 2016, the idea behind ShipsGo was to achieve “ship together go better.” According to the CEO of the company, Merdan Erdogan, this paradigm is still valid.

ShipsGo increased the number of services in 2018. In the middle of 2018, the company launched a new dynamic algorithm “Octopus” based on the big data generated by the container shipping ecosystem movements. Since then, thanks to this unique algorithm, the company has started to introduce new services to provide cost optimization, fewer transshipment, and shorter transit times for all stakeholders in the shipping community.

Merdan Erdogan, CEO of ShipsGo, commented: “with ShipsGo, we are making what our industry needs; combining the industry knowledge with the technology. The adaptation of technology in the shipping industry needs special attention. Without understanding the industry structure and mechanism, you can not solve the problems of our partners with technology only. We have achieved a lot in the last three years, but the journey of ShipsGo is far from finished – our goals are still high. ”

To understand better ShipsGo visit the features page.

Who is Ruscon?

Ruscon was founded in 1996 in the seaport of Novorossiysk in South Russia. The company entered the container transportation and agency market of St.Petersburg in North-Western Russia in 2021. Starting in 2003, Ruscon has invested in developing land-side container terminals in Southern Russia and develops terminals in the Moscow region and North-West of the country.

Ruscon provides its own regular intermodal service between the Russian Pacific port of Vostochniy and the MANP terminal in Moscow. Ruscon is one of Russia’s leading container transportation companies. Their capacity is 250 000 TEU containers annually, passing via main Russian and CIS ports.

ShipsGo Container Tracking Service

Company: RUSCON

Approach: ShipsGo Freight Forwarder API Service

Ruscon’s customer service department has been using ShipsGo services for more than one year. The company exports its products to more than 32 all over the world and uses 10 different container shipping lines in its shipments. Before using the ShipsGo tracking API module, they used to track their shipments’ containers from the shipping lines’ websites and spent too much time on each single container tracking.

ShipsGo gives API (Application Programming Interface) technology to its customers. API is a software intermediary that allows two applications to talk to each other. For the sake of simplification, let us explain how it works. It has many containers to track its customized software system. The ShipsGo is part of its system supplying the current locations of the related containers. What is missing is the critical link to communicate Ruscon’s container tracking request to the ShipsGo and deliver Ruscon’srequest back to its system. In this case, API is Messenger, which takes Ruscon’s request and tells the ShipsGo system what to do. Then, ShipsGo delivers the current position of the related container. The Company’s software system acquires it and delivers it to its related customer.

Ruscon increased the visibility of its shipments thanks to ShipsGo. In addition to that, After using the ShipsGo API Tracking Module, time spent on tracking decreased significantly.

Outcomes:

Ruscon integrated its software system with ShipsGo tracking services via API integration.

Time spent on tracking decreased significantly.

Ruscon increased the visibility of its shipments.
