In the modern world, two critical themes, carbon offsetting, and sustainability, have gained a significant position. One industry where these themes hold particular relevance is shipping. As the backbone of global trade, the shipping industry’s environmental impact is essential. In this blog post, we’ll dive into the concepts of “Carbon Offsetting and Sustainability in the Shipping Industry,”. Exploring how these ideas shape how goods are transported and the industry’s efforts to balance its operations with environmental concerns.

As ShipsGo, we understand the importance of the concept of sustainability. We include the concepts of offsetting and sustainability in our plans. Our active service, “Carbon Offsetting” has served our customers for a while.

Methanol fuel is an alternative product from methanol, defined as liquid alcohol. Methanol is usually produced from natural gas, coal, biomass, and carbon dioxide sources. Ships using these fuels are called Methanol Fuel Ships.

There are different types of methanol;

Grey Methanol

Brown Methanol

Blue Methanol

Green Methanol

Gray and brown methanol is produced from fossil wood raw materials such as natural gas and coal.

Blue methanol has a lower carbon value than gray and brown methanol. It is associated with hydrogen conversion.

Green methanol is produced from biomass and renewable energy sources (electricity etc.).

Different Types of Methanol

If we want to examine the use of methanol in the shipping industry, the main usage area will, of course, be ship fuel.

So what are these Methanol Fuel Ships? Let’s examine. 🠗

Methanol Fuel Ships

What is Methanol Fuel Ship?
Ships using methanol as their primary fuel source are called methanol fuel ships. As we mentioned at the blog’s beginning, these ships may use different sources according to methanol types. It is a cleaner burning fuel with lower emissions than traditional marine fuels.

These ships have been the focus for a while to reduce environmental concerns and emissions. So, are these really sustainable and environmentally friendly?

Methanol Fuel Ships and Sustainability

The fuel resources used are very important for sustainability and carbon emission reduction. According to classical fuel types, Gray and Brown methanol types don’t have different features.

When Green and Blue methanol types are not used, the carbon emission released does not change much. It is very important to use sustainable resources. In this way, it is possible to reduce carbon emissions. If you are concerned about your carbon emissions and want a sustainable future, we at ShipsGo care about this.

While developing our Carbon Offset Service, we examined the factors that pollute the environment in marine logistics. Whether you work in the logistics industry or not, you may be heartbroken when you hear about its environmental impact. It is also not fair to place the blame only on the container ships that provide the trade. It is an issue that everyone, from the end consumer to the carrier, should take responsibility for. So, how do the effects spread to the environment during a ship’s voyage? Then let’s examine what carbon offsetting and insetting are.

What are the differences between carbon offsetting and insetting?

With the Carbon Offsetting service offered by ShipsGo, a new perspective on sustainability has come into the marine logistics industry. So how does Carbon Offsetting work? The carbon emissions made by the company during the journey of the ship it is loading are calculated. In order to balance this Carbon produced, a project is selected, and this project is supported. These projects are presented with two types of offsetting scenarios. The first is “energy efficiency,” and the second is “reforestation.” You can see the details when you enter your dashboard in ShipsGo and click the “Green Future” button.

Another option that we call “insetting” as an alternative to the Carbon Offset option is used within logistics companies. Carbon insetting is when an organization invests in sustainable practices within its supply chain. Carbon insetting support the implementation of practices that sequester Carbon, promote climate resilience, protect biodiversity, and restore ecosystems. While purchasing a project from a certified institution in offsetting, the company produces projects in insetting itself and aims to reduce carbon emissions. That’s the basic difference between carbon offsetting and insetting.

There may be things you may wonder about carbon emissions. 👇

What is Greenhouse Gas Emission?
Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), Hydrofluoride carbons (HFCs), Perfluorocarbons (PFCs), Sulfurhexa fluoride (SF6), and compounds that have the property of retaining heat in the atmosphere are called greenhouse gases. Since gases such as sulfur and nitrogen oxides, which have a greenhouse effect, also form acid with rain and return to the earth in the form of acid rains, their harms have been understood earlier, and they are gases that were banned many years ago.

What is carbon emission?

One of the most critical greenhouse effect gases (GHG) is Carbon (CO2). Due to the fuel a ship consumes during its voyage, nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide particles are also emitted in addition to carbon dioxide.

Unless you’re a chemist, it’s normal not to know what these gases are. Now, let’s make them understandable to everyone by addressing the environmental damage they cause. With the accumulation of carbon dioxide, the gas barrier surrounding our world increases, which causes global warming. With increasing temperatures, the climate balance changes, and drought occurs. We see the effect of carbon dioxide accumulation even in foods because drought affects many organisms. With our simple explanation, you can imagine how big an impact carbon dioxide emissions have. On the other hand, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur oxide diffuse as solid particles in the air and cause the ozone layer to be depleted. Depletion of the ozone layer means; It means that harmful rays from the sun directly affect our world.

The container shipping industry plays a major role in global trade, facilitating the transportation of goods through various channels such as seaways, airways, railways, and highways. However, this industry also has a consequential impact on the climate and environment, contributing to air pollution, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainability and carbon offset services are very crucial at this point.

For example, The CO2 emissions of the world’s 15 largest ships are equal to the emissions of 760 million cars. In addition to these massive ships and their impact, ports are also responsible for tons of CO2.

Nevertheless, an average of 417.2 parts per million CO2 were present in 2022, a rise of more than 25% in just 50 years.

Carbon Offset is viewed as a quick, straightforward, and practical way to motivate action to reduce the effects of climate change.

What is Carbon Offset?

Fossil fuels play a critical role in the current state of the global economy, particularly in transportation. The significant capital invested in fossil fuels and their affordable and practical energy output make them the backbone of transportation operations.

The service balances the unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions during shipping operations. It is a necessary process to prevent the effects of climate change and to breathe cleaner air. Companies and organizations can use the ShipsGo Carbon Offset service to offset their carbon emissions during business processes. This is a certified and approved method. The institutions will make this certificate mandatory for companies and organizations over the years.

ShipsGo services for the environmental sustainability

As ShipsGo, we have been conducting environmental sustainability projects internally. We developed our new service, CO2 emissions calculation. The current methodology of this service includes EN 16258 and ISO14083 compliant calculations. On this basis, we started to display the CO2 emission amount of each seaway shipment. We provide accountable emissions data to encourage our clients to use this service in their logistics business decisions, such as selecting more fuel-efficient routes and carriers. Our academic methodology developers continuously monitor and update the core sources for the calculation. We realize that more needs to be done and should keep going at this point regarding the topic being so vital that it affects our individual and social habits. Accordingly, we are preparing the carbon offset service to introduce our users. With the Carbon Offset service, you will be able to offset CO2 and greenhouse gas by contributing financially to validated projects worldwide. Based on the sensitivity of the subject, we consulted the members of ShipsGo Academy and our valuable academic advisors, Onur Akdaş and Volkan Çetinkaya, to approach the situation from a scholarly point of view. Here is our Carbon Offset Article covered in all its details!

CO2 methodology

What is Carbon Offset?

The utilization of fossil fuels is crucial to the current state of the world economy. Fossil fuels are the core of transportation operations due to the capital invested in them and the cheap and practical energy they produce. Nevertheless, more than 417 ppm of carbon dioxide were present in the atmosphere on average in 2022, a rise of more than 25% in just 50 years.

ShipsGo is concerned about climate change and is committed to promoting environmental sustainability! Carbon offsets neutralize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that could not be avoided during shipping operations. It is viewed as a quick, straightforward, and practical way to motivate action to reduce the effects of climate change. By funding proposed environmental-sensitive projects, container transportation companies and beneficial cargo owners will be able to neutralize their share of overall emissions for a certain shipment.

Can Carbon Offsets Aid in the Reduction of GHG Emissions?

Carbon offsets arise when a polluting corporation purchases a carbon credit to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions it has produced. The funds should be used to support global efforts to reduce carbon emissions or to assist local initiatives that do the same. If carried out properly, carbon offsetting can directly fund environmentally friendly sustainable development projects that reduce emissions, giving businesses time to work toward achieving net zero emissions.

Should Offsetting Operations Need To Be Certified By Accredited Organizations?

Yes. Controlling the flow of the fund to the appropriate projects and ensuring that the offset projects are using verified methodologies and are not resulting in emissions elsewhere in the world should be the responsibility of third-party organizations that are accredited to monitor offsets. The following is a list of features of verified offsetting projects:

· Positive Emission Reduction: Projects should be visible and employ scientific calculations to be monitored hands down.

· Irreversible Emission Reduction: Projects should guarantee that the GHG emissions reduced cannot be reversed and are removed permanently.

· No Leakage to the Rest: The project must not produce any new emissions or be able to compensate for its own carbon output. For instance, the pollution of one sea cannot be viewed as an unintended consequence of a project whose objective is to clean up the seas.

What Will Shipsgo Offer For Carbon Offset?

ShipsGo works together with Semtrio, which is a member of the CDP Accredited Provider community, as well as the GRI Community and the United Nations Global Compact. Semtrio offers our customers eligible projects that have the aforementioned features, which can be used to offset emissions.

We have chosen ongoing, effective, and appropriate environmentally friendly projects to offer our customers. By picking any of them, the desired amount of emissions will be offset, funds will be transferred directly to the project, and accredited organizations, in this case, Semtrio, will track and report the benefits of the current offset to the project.

For example, for the ShipsGo case, a customer may track a container that released a given quantity of GHG into the environment, which ShipsGo has already begun to compute. The customer then decides whether to offset this (less or higher) amount of carbon. ShipsGo presents the projects and their associated offsetting fees, and the process begins. Customers will receive their certificates shortly after offsetting. Furthermore, our customers will track the impact of their carbon offset on overall emissions and take action to become a net zero-emission company.

The aforementioned carbon offset service will be implemented in our system very soon. As the authors and readers of this article, we are individuals and companies that are intertwined with the container transportation industry, which is one of the most significant contributors to CO2 emissions in the world. To perceive this responsibility to our planet and take a step towards becoming a net-zero emission company, we kindly request you not to ignore such sustainability projects and services you encounter.

CO₂ emission in shipping

We should know that with the increase in maritime trade, the effect of CO₂ emissions has also started to be of great importance. In the last few months, we have all very much perceived the importance of the shipping industry to the global economy, with commercial ships transporting 90% of global trade.

The changing world and the impact of CO₂ emissions

We can say that the shipping industry has become the main vein of world trade with the rise of the Covid-19 pandemic; with the onset of the pandemic, humanity started a new era of online shopping. While imports and exports inevitably expanded around the globe, we have witnessed many crises like insufficient space, traffic in the ports, and scarcity of resources.

Well, while world commerce has increased so vastly and shipping companies are producing more and more vessels every day and releasing them into the water, have you thought about the impact of this situation on the world? This article will underline the sustainability in the shipping industry and ShipsGo‘s attitude on the matter.

Transport and logistics emit 3.5 billion tonnes of CO₂ every year. Transitioning to a net-zero economy by eliminating emissions in the sector has become the priority of the world shipping giants trying to reach the 7th and 13th goals of the United Nations “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDG’s).

ShipsGo will indicate CO₂ emissions

ShipsGo has stepped into a new study to raise awareness of all our users on the sustainable shipping industry. In the ShipsGo Academy’s “Environmental Sensitivity For Container Transportation” study, we examined the importance of being environmentally sensitive in carrier company selection. We concluded that for most BCOs and Forwarders, this criterion is of great importance. In other words, we observed that the people related to the industry attach importance to sustainability and the environment, so we worked for a development where they can see the environmental impact of the voyage they are tracking. All of our users will be able to monitor how much carbon is released during the container’s voyage they tracked. We have updated the beneficial notification emails they always receive and included the carbon emission during transportation.

Environmental sensitivity at a glance

As the ShipsGo team, we pursued comprehensive research about the importance of environmental sensitivity for beneficial cargo owners (BCOs) and freight forwarders in container transportation. The study was developed by collaborating with the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey with the participation of university professors and students. Eighty-one countries participated in this study. 70% of all participants are from 20 countries. USA and Turkey are the leading countries in participation.

Primarily, we aimed to clarify the container transportation buying behavior of the users in the decarbonization process. We detect insights for all participants of the container shipping industry. We wanted to share the process and the results to create awareness with this blog based on the research.

In this blog, we covered the subject of environmental sensitivity in container transportation and what it means for BCOs and freight forwarders?

What is Environmental Sensitivity?

Environmental sensitivity is a condition that perceives and processes environmental exposures. Basically, our ability to understand and then process all environmental components.

Does the Container Carrier is Being Environmentally Sensitive Matter?

According to the BCO’s (32.7% of the participants) and the freight forwarders (67.3% of the participants) from 81 countries, container carriers’ environmental sensitivity is a variable in selecting stage of most of the participants. 71.8% of all respondents, 72.9% of the forwarders, and 71.2% of BCOs agree that “Environmental Sensitivity of the Container Carrier” is the carrier selection variable. Besides, 14.3% of all respondents have no idea, whereas 13.9% do not agree.

Does the Carrier’s Environmental Sensitivity Worth Paying Extra Freights and Accepting Longer Transit Times?

Even If the carrier is environmentally sensitive, only 56,8 % of the users agree to pay more freight costs. 62,9 % of the users accept longer transit times.

Comparing the freight forwarders and BCO’s, freight forwarders are more aware of both actions. This attitude might relate to being in the same industry (logistics and transportation) and facing the logistics environmental facts more intensely than the BCOs.

What are the Other Important Factors in Container Carrier Selection?

According to the results, for both freight forwarders and BCOs, schedule reliability is the most crucial factor for carrier selection. The second critical factor is transit time, whereas transshipment is the third. The less essential factors are service frequency and freight cost for the participants. However, surprising results appeared when we combined these factors:

A higher freight cost is acceptable if there is a shorter transit time.

A higher freight cost is acceptable if there is schedule reliability.

A longer transit time is acceptable if there is a higher service frequency.

While we are ending this blog, we conclude that users tend to use an integrated approach in the container carrier selection process. Container carriers should be environmentally friendly. They need to be reliable for their schedule, and have shorter transit times. Together, these three characteristics can be called a “perfect set” in the container carrier selection process.
