ShipsGo services for the environmental sustainability
As ShipsGo, we have been conducting environmental sustainability projects internally. We developed our new service, CO2 emissions calculation. The current methodology of this service includes EN 16258 and ISO14083 compliant calculations. On this basis, we started to display the CO2 emission amount of each seaway shipment. We provide accountable emissions data to encourage our clients to use this service in their logistics business decisions, such as selecting more fuel-efficient routes and carriers. Our academic methodology developers continuously monitor and update the core sources for the calculation. We realize that more needs to be done and should keep going at this point regarding the topic being so vital that it affects our individual and social habits. Accordingly, we are preparing the carbon offset service to introduce our users. With the Carbon Offset service, you will be able to offset CO2 and greenhouse gas by contributing financially to validated projects worldwide. Based on the sensitivity of the subject, we consulted the members of ShipsGo Academy and our valuable academic advisors, Onur Akdaş and Volkan Çetinkaya, to approach the situation from a scholarly point of view. Here is our Carbon Offset Article covered in all its details!
What is Carbon Offset?
The utilization of fossil fuels is crucial to the current state of the world economy. Fossil fuels are the core of transportation operations due to the capital invested in them and the cheap and practical energy they produce. Nevertheless, more than 417 ppm of carbon dioxide were present in the atmosphere on average in 2022, a rise of more than 25% in just 50 years.
ShipsGo is concerned about climate change and is committed to promoting environmental sustainability! Carbon offsets neutralize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that could not be avoided during shipping operations. It is viewed as a quick, straightforward, and practical way to motivate action to reduce the effects of climate change. By funding proposed environmental-sensitive projects, container transportation companies and beneficial cargo owners will be able to neutralize their share of overall emissions for a certain shipment.
Can Carbon Offsets Aid in the Reduction of GHG Emissions?
Carbon offsets arise when a polluting corporation purchases a carbon credit to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions it has produced. The funds should be used to support global efforts to reduce carbon emissions or to assist local initiatives that do the same. If carried out properly, carbon offsetting can directly fund environmentally friendly sustainable development projects that reduce emissions, giving businesses time to work toward achieving net zero emissions.
Should Offsetting Operations Need To Be Certified By Accredited Organizations?
Yes. Controlling the flow of the fund to the appropriate projects and ensuring that the offset projects are using verified methodologies and are not resulting in emissions elsewhere in the world should be the responsibility of third-party organizations that are accredited to monitor offsets. The following is a list of features of verified offsetting projects:
· Positive Emission Reduction: Projects should be visible and employ scientific calculations to be monitored hands down.
· Irreversible Emission Reduction: Projects should guarantee that the GHG emissions reduced cannot be reversed and are removed permanently.
· No Leakage to the Rest: The project must not produce any new emissions or be able to compensate for its own carbon output. For instance, the pollution of one sea cannot be viewed as an unintended consequence of a project whose objective is to clean up the seas.
What Will Shipsgo Offer For Carbon Offset?
ShipsGo works together with Semtrio, which is a member of the CDP Accredited Provider community, as well as the GRI Community and the United Nations Global Compact. Semtrio offers our customers eligible projects that have the aforementioned features, which can be used to offset emissions.
We have chosen ongoing, effective, and appropriate environmentally friendly projects to offer our customers. By picking any of them, the desired amount of emissions will be offset, funds will be transferred directly to the project, and accredited organizations, in this case, Semtrio, will track and report the benefits of the current offset to the project.
For example, for the ShipsGo case, a customer may track a container that released a given quantity of GHG into the environment, which ShipsGo has already begun to compute. The customer then decides whether to offset this (less or higher) amount of carbon. ShipsGo presents the projects and their associated offsetting fees, and the process begins. Customers will receive their certificates shortly after offsetting. Furthermore, our customers will track the impact of their carbon offset on overall emissions and take action to become a net zero-emission company.
The aforementioned carbon offset service will be implemented in our system very soon. As the authors and readers of this article, we are individuals and companies that are intertwined with the container transportation industry, which is one of the most significant contributors to CO2 emissions in the world. To perceive this responsibility to our planet and take a step towards becoming a net-zero emission company, we kindly request you not to ignore such sustainability projects and services you encounter.
